The Beau Soleil Podcast – Episode 4: Bridging Generations Through Service
The Beau Soleil Podcast returns with a fourth episode exploring the power of human connection and what happens when two generations come together to share experiences, perspectives and stories.
Produced by members of our Podcast & Newspaper Club, the podcast gives students a platform to reflect on the experiences, ideas and conversations that shape life at Beau Soleil while developing their communication, curiosity and critical thinking skills.
Episode 4: Service, Community and the Power of Connection
Twice a year, Beau Soleil students join members of Les Gentianes in Ollon for an afternoon of food, conversation and laughter. What may appear to be a simple gathering offers an opportunity to build meaningful relationships, challenge assumptions and discover what different generations can learn from one another.
In this special bilingual French-English episode, students, teachers and members of Les Gentianes share their perspectives on the value of these encounters.
The discussion explores:
-
the importance of human connection and the impact of loneliness
-
the assumptions and perceptions younger and older generations hold about one another
-
the role of service in developing empathy, understanding and a sense of community
-
the unexpected friendships and connections that emerge through shared experiences
-
and how giving our time to others can be just as rewarding for those offering it as for those receiving it
At Beau Soleil, service is an important part of education, encouraging students to look beyond their own experiences, engage with the wider community and develop a greater understanding of the world around them.
Yet, as this episode reveals, service is not simply about giving. While students may arrive believing they are there to offer something to others, they often leave with new perspectives, meaningful connections and lessons of their own.
The conversation raises an important question: when we engage in service, who is really learning from whom?
Sometimes, the most valuable lessons come not from what we give, but from what we discover in one another
