University Challenge: A Look at How Far We Have Come After Five Editions
By Paula Kesteloot
Last Monday morning, we held our 5th University Challenge, and it inspired me to reflect on how far this event has come since its beginnings in 2021.
How it all Started
The concept is based on the much-loved British TV show that many of us grew up watching, where teams from different universities compete head-to-head each week. Bringing that same spirit to Beau Soleil felt like a natural fit.
When I first envisioned the competition, I imagined teams on stage in front of a live audience during assembly. With six boarding houses, however, it quickly became clear that managing this logistically would be difficult.
Taking It to the Next Level
However, everything changed in 2022 when Mr MacRae our Faculty Lead for Design and a dedicated fan of the show, stepped in and offered to help run the event. With his enthusiasm and technical expertise, the competition evolved into a highly polished production. Instead of a simple assembly, it became our very own Beau Soleil TV broadcast, streamed live from the SPV into classrooms across campus.
Students in tutor group clusters take part by completing answer booklets together, while the competing house teams in the SPV are encouraged by the lively presence of their house parents.
Questions, Languages and Challenge
The questions come from two sources. Teachers submit challenges from their subject areas, while I like to contribute what I call general knowledge questions, the sort of curious facts and ideas that spark wider intellectual interest.
In keeping with the bilingual heritage of Beau Soleil, the competition is fully bilingual. Answers may be given in English, French or both, and teams must stay alert in both languages.
Last Monday’s event was one of the closest to date, with just half a point separating first and second place.
